Greetings, Just want to hear peoples opinions on the merits of using booms or having your bees palletized and then using a loader. Personal experiences, the number of hives needed to justify having one or the other. Limitations of the two. General discussion of the subject. Thanx

I'm not the voice of experience by any means on this but here are a few thoughts. I have a loader on my rig. Most of my contracts are under 50 hives. Although I'm buying a new forklift in 2005, I cant see loading and unloading it and lugging it around to move 24 hives here or 15 hives there. Many of my friends have thousands of hives; quite a different story for them. If you get the right loader, the work is quick, safe and easy. I'm going to follow the example of a friend of mine and set all of my hives to be able to be loaded individually, but construct pallets to accept those hives when they are to be shipped out palletized. Are you looking for a loader?

Interesting Harry. I suspect you (and the other person configured to load complete hives on pallets) must have conventional bottom boards, maybe even smaller than normal bottom boards? Are the pallets larger and more rugged?

Greetings, Looking for a loader, depends on the price doesn't? Mostly curious, I would be interested in a boom. Or plans on how to build one. It seems like a boom is the best fit for me at this time. Though I don't know that I like the idea of "handling" every hive. However a loader whould work well with my other work (market farmer). I could still be persuaded either way. I have experience with someone elses NH loader (bobcat style) and liked it. Though they are a little rough on the ground where you turn and you have to pay for upkeep... Does anyone have any thoughts as to how many hives justify a loader and pallets? Harry how many hives do you run with your boom?
