I lost two hives over the winter- but the boxes are still full of capped honey- can I install new bees in the old hives (I don't know what the hive died from but assume mite load)- or do I need to get rid of the capped honey frames? thank you. clc

Since you don’t know why the hive died you should clean the hive and start over. The honey is 100% safe to eat. If it weirds you out to use it, prepare it and donate it to your food bank.

I had the same issue with two of my hives. I just installed the new bees in the hive. If there is no sign of foul brood or other illnesses, I just let the new bees work their magic and clean up the hive and use the honey themselves to establish the new hive. I have done this in the past (advice I received in previous bee meetings) and the bees thrived!
