It's been 60 degree's during the day and around 25 degree's in the mornings been like this for over a month now. I've been feeding syrup and the girls have been taking in close to a half gallon a day (each hive) and they have been bringing in lots of pollen. My question is should I be feeding them candyboard instead of syrup ? An old beeker told me it's too early to be giving them syrup and now I'm wondering if I'm in the wrong.

Hey Will, Haven't heard from you in a while. We've been feeding syrup here, just downriver from you. LOTS of pollen coming in. I can think of two possible issues. If its much below 50, I don't think the bees take syrup all that well, so dry feed is the emergency winter feed preference. But the bees have been taking syrup pretty well here so I don't think that is an issue with these temps. The only other issue i can think of is the possibility of overstimulating the queen. With the amount of pollen coming in, our bees have really kicked up brood rearing. So by feeding syrup, stimulating more brood rearing, the feeding treadmill begins. So personally, given the conditions, I don't think it is too early for syrup. In colder year, It might very well be too early. If they weren't taking it and I thought were light on stores, I would think about dry sugar. Matt

Have you ever given dry sugar? If so, how did you give it and are they able to eat the granules?
