Anyone have experience with nadiring (as opposed to supering) the second deep brood box on a Lanstroth? The first brood box is filling fast. Would make sense to add the next box below, for the same reasons it is done on a Warre. One obvious benefit is keeping the warmth of the brood at the top on the hive.

Hello, Langstroth is not Warre so don't try to manage them the same, place the second full of foundation deep on top because the bees like to work up and the extra heat helps them with wax production. putting it under may get it drawn but no where near as quickly as on top.. and since we are in a dearth feed the heck out of them if you want wax made 1:1 probably best now. Good luck this season

I nadir 8 frame medium foundationless lanstroth hives yearly. I am not after big honey production, though, I do get good amounts of honey in an average good season. I just like to have happy healthy bees without chemical treatments. I do pull off the other boxes one at a time. In nature bees build from the top of a cavity down. They move up in a supered box so well because they do not like empty space above them. I also, bottom super with checker boarded full frames (from opening the brood nest) and empty frames. But what works for one may not for another.

Never put foundation below a box of comb. The opposite is ok.

Never put foundation below a box of comb. The opposite is ok. Back in the late '80s and early '90s slatted bottom boards were the big fad. The speal was that it "gave excess bees a place to hang out". That didn't make sense to me. Shouldn't those bees be doing something? So, I picked out several hives that had great big bee beards in the evening and placed a super of plastic foundation on t he bottom to see what would happen if they "hung out" there. They drew out the nicest comb I've ever seen although it was slightly dark with traffic residue. Interestingly, the queen did not go down and lay in the new comb and no stores were present there. Just nice straight comb for next year. Never done that since!
