Hello All, and Harry this is kinda geared towards you. You came to our PMBA meeting and talked about nucs. I have some questions regarding selling honey. I would appreciate any info from anybody on the forum but I know Harry you operate as a business.
I may have the opportunity to sell some of my honey at a local nursery next year. I don't have very many colonies but they all produce fairly well. In the last few years I finally had enough honey to sell to friends, neighbors, and people from work. I know you can do farm direct sales and consignment without having a food license, but what about a business license? If I start selling honey at a local nursery do I need a business license? Do I need to register a business name?
I'm not talking about having this as a big business, maybe a few hundred bucks a year in sales to help pay for my sugar. I basically see selling honey as a way to support my hobby.
Any advice??
Eric

Well, since everybody is too busy scraping down their deadouts, I'll answer. Do you like paying taxes? If you are making income and would like to deduct expenses from the resultant taxes you will need to operate as a business. If you are operating under ANY name other than, Eric Walls Honey, or Eric Walls Bees, you will need to register a business name with the Secretary of State. Once that is done, go to your bank and open a new checking account under that name. Start a set of books at home. Talk to a number of insurance companies. Now you are in business. Good luck and MAKE IT HAPPEN!! Normy

That's why I was wondering if it's even worth it. What type of insurance would I need?

That's why I was wondering if it's even worth it. HUH? OF COURSE IT'S WORTH IT!! I didn't land my new Bell 429 by selling the evening paper! What type of insurance would I need? That is the first question to ask the insurance agents. Normy

Okay, you convinced me. I'll start out small and go from there. Maybe some day I'll even move up to pollination. I guess it's how many sideline guys got started. Might as well work in a field that you actually enjoy. I started beekeeping as a way to de stress from my regular job (middle school social studies teacher.)

Yes, I knew Cecil Dillard!! I student taught for him at Dallas. The best guy ever!!! I don't think I would have survived this long in teaching if I student taught for someone else. I loved Dallas High School and coaching for Ron August. That was the best time of my career. Cecil is probably the best teacher I have ever seen.

oh man......just like with Ron I had no idea. I would have definitely gone to the service. I did some coaching at LaCreole as well and knew his wife. They were such great people. I still have the letter of recommendation he wrote for me and that's the reason why I got hired where I currently teach. He had a great relationship with kids and was a hell of a basketball coach. He was one of the good ones!!

I just have to say: There are some people in my work history for which I am SO VERY GRATEFUL for. They made all the difference in the world.
I think in your line of work, the fact that you worked with Ron August AND Cecil Dillard is major bragging rights. Both the best of the best in my opinion. You are very fortunate.

These 2 teachers/coaches were legendary and inspired so many student/athletes and peers alike. They both helped me so much and took me in when I was young and trying to decide if I wanted to teach or not. I'm going to try and pursue selling some honey this next year. Seems like a lot of guys got started in beekeeping and started selling honey, and moved into pollination. Don't know if that's in the cards for me but, to be able to make a little to support my hobby is something I'd like to do.

Was Frank Pender still around when you were getting started? We remain very good friends. Kinda funny: Liz and I went to a farm auction in Dallas and were getting ready to leave several years ago. There was a circle of people talking and one of the guys in the circle caught my eye. I stood and stared in total disbelief!!! It was Frank Pender. I had not seen him in years. And here's the thing; he had not aged one minute in 40 years!!!! We visited with him for a while and then after arriving home I pulled out a yearbook from 1970 and showed his picture to Liz. Unbelievable!!! The guy just does not age!! !!!??

Didn't know Frank Pender. I coached football at Dallas from 88-90, and student taught there and the middle school. Wish I could have stayed but no one was retiring at that time and I got hired at Centennial. Great community there.
Ham sandwiches sound good, hope you guys have a great Thanksgiving. Can't wait to make my first million selling some honey! It's all easy money right, that's what you said at the conference.
