I bought a working hive in June with one deep super and a 6 1/2 inch honey super on the top. The bees were still in the deep super when I brought it home. After about 4 weeks, I opened the box and found the bottom box was nearly full and there were a few bees in the top box. Some building was going on in that box. There was not have a queen excluder between the boxes. I added a deep super over the bottom box, then a queen excluder and put the shallow box on the top. It as been over a month since I opened the box. The bees have been busy and it appeared that there were a lot more bees moving in and out of the hive. However, when I opened my hive today, I found that the bees were still only in the bottom box. It does appear to be full. The bees were very calm. I attempted to remove some of the frames but they are so stuck together that I could not get them out. The frames in the top box, which previously had a few bees, is now empty. I fear that my queen my be dead but I don't know how to go about getting the frames in the bottom box out without damaging it. Any help will be appreciated. I really like my bees and do not want to kill them! Help!

Take that empty deep box off and put the shallow back. Throw MAQS on on the next three days below 80 and then a week later reduce the entrance. Remove the MAQS then and put a single sheet of newspaper down. Dump some dry sugar on top. Close and don't open until February. That is my advice. Others will say feed. They know more than I do so listen to them whatever they say. But I would not be trying to expand them right now nor would I pull frames out of your brood nest. It's robbing time. It's not flow time.
