The Tualatin SWCD, which serves all of Washington County, pays each year for a booth at the Washington County Fair on July 25-28. Our staff members work the booth alone or in pairs from 10am to 8pm each of those days. This year, our theme is pollinator hedgerows for conservation. We have amazing staff and Board members who are great at talking to the public about native plants for pollinators, the effects of pesticide on pollinator populations, and so forth. However, we are not very good at fielding questions about the pollinators themselves, which can range from native bees to honey bees to bats... you know the list. Our Board members in particular are eager to work with community volunteers who might be interested to donate a few hours of time to help out. Basically, all the volunteer would need to do is sit in the booth and answer questions for whatever shift they agreed to. If they don't know the answer to a question, that's ok - they probably know more than we do, and we can always get back to folks later on tricky stuff. We can cover the cost of parking and admission to the fair would be free if they are working with us, so there are those perks. Let me know what you think! If you can refer me to any other pollinator geniuses, I'd really appreciate that too. Xerces Society cannot help due to staff time and budget constraints. I'm of on the 25th, but I work nights so I'm really only awake and mostly alert after 1700. If you would like someone to sit and wax poetic for the evening I could. (maybe bring along a jar of drones to play with)
