while waiting for verification from John Hafernik as to whether A. borealis or some other phorid fly is the culprit with my bees. Thanks Kyle -- glad to have another Zombee fighter on the team !! I was also a bit apprehensive that the pupae may be from a different fly, but when Dr. Hafernik called me last week, he said not to worry about which kind of fly it might be, even though all indications are A. borealis. He said that although the discovery is important in any case, it would be a far more important discovery if a new fly parasite had also made the jump to honey bees. At this point, let's just hope for one Zombee culprit. Also, out of my four samples, only one bee hatched chrysalis, so if your samples don't hatch, keep catching so you get a large enough sampling to be sure one way or the other. Also Dr. Hafernik probably told you that reportinng negative results is just as important to seeing the overall picture of the spread of this parasite, so keep up the faith brother.....
