I have to move my hive about 20 feet from where it is. I really don't want to pack up the hive, move it 5 miles and then move it back. Is it true that I can only move it 2" a day? It faces East and I have to move it south about 10 feet and west about 10 feet.
Also, I have one deep super right now (got my bees about a month ago), and I was planning on putting a queen excluder on and then another deep super. Sound o.k. or do I have to put two deeps on for brood before I put the queen excluder on?

How about 2 and 1/2 miles or 5 inches per day? If you are going to over winter your bees I find it a good idea to put the second deep above the excluder until the fall. I've had a hard time encouraging them to fill both deeps when below the excluder.

Oops, must have had some dyslexia when listening during bee school. (: I've heard that you can move it a couple feet at a time if moving it directly backward (i.e. east to west, with hive facing east). What do you think?
I don't think I'm going to try to overwinter. I was thinking I'd use the deep for my own honey consumption. I know they can get heavy, but with one hive, I figured I could take out the frames individually. All I really have available is the deep at the moment. If that's not a good idea, I'll post a request for frames for a western super (have the box, but not the frames).

Interesting! I don't recall ever mentioning or let alone thinking about a move backwards. With one hive they should be able to see and understand the move. Please keep me posted on this one.
Deeps are fine. I spin deep honey every year. It is heavier, but you you have a strong back, you'll be fine. Keep an eye on your crop in August. Sometimes I've left frames in for them to cure and when I went back all the honey was gone. So if they fill a frame and cap it at least 90%, pull it out and replace the frame.

Oh, you didn't mention the move backward in your class. I heard it somewhere else. Since you haven't heard of that, I may just stick to the 5" (o.k., maybe 6") rule to be on the safe side.
Thanks for the quick responses!
