Hi all- I know I've approached this in a less than thorough way but thought I was going to be getting some help from a friend which hasn't panned out. I am going to Eugene on Friday to pick up my first ever box of bees and am totally and completely unprepared. I've always wanted to have bees and am doing this as somewhat of an experiment since we live in Sisters and there isn't a lot of any kind of blossom/bloom nearby and it is incredibly cold here. I am open to direction as to how to proceed with the bees I will be picking up this coming week!

Wendy, You need to get together with the Central Oregon Beekeepers. There are many beekeepers in your area, at least a lot of them took my classes up there over the last couple of years. They will be meeting this month. Here is the contact information: Central Oregon Beekeepers Meets Even Numbered Months Call numbers below for location President: Dennis Gallagher (541)-389-4776 Secretary/Treasurer: Glenda Galaba (541)-383-1775 Email: galaba@msn.com

Hi Wendy, I am a member of the Central Oregon Bee Keeper's Association. Am sure we can provide some help and advice. Lots of advice. We will be meeting this week Tuesday April 15th to celebrate having our taxes done. Just kidding. To celebrate spring and bee keeping. We will meet at Strictly Organic Coffee shop at the corners of Bond and Colorado, a little north of down town Bend at 6:30. If you can be there you are welcome. Or, call one of our members, some contact numbers are in the Branches section of this ORSBA website. Have you ever hived packaged bees before? It looks like the weekend should be very nice for working with bees.

Oops, Strictly Organic is south of Downtown Bend, not north. I better get my compass out when I give directions.

Its been good so far.........big learning curve but very enjoyable. Nobody swarmed, have two honey supers on (being very optimistic), incorporated a polystyrene hive with the wood hive body to see how that works and ultimately to see if the polystyrene hive will help the bees over the very cold winter months. Still not so clear on when to pull the honey and when to medicate given the very late spring/summer we experienced. The weather extremes here continue with 32 degrees in the morning and 95 in the afternoon. AND I am hoping for assistance from some kind & experienced soul to deal with both those tasks!
