Last Month:
Honeybee diseases and pests were the central theme for the evenings discussion. Unfortunately, some of our members have suffered considerable losses this winter. There are strong indications that the standard miticide treatments are loosing efficacy.
Nosema was discussed. The majority of the meeting was dedicated to queens and the dream of genetic resistance to various pests especially Varroa and tracheal mites. Some of our prominent members purchase queens from Florida, Hawaii and California. At the close of the discussion, the general consensus was a strong, lasting relationship with your preferred queen breeder is more likely to benefit your beekeeping hobby or business than jumping from breeder to breeder searching for the magic genetics.
This Month, Friday, March 25, 7:30, OSU Extension office, Aloha:
Mark Johnson, a long time member of our club, will be our presenter. He'll discuss nucs, splits, requeening & spring management followed by Q and A. This meeting should be fun and informative.
