Does anyone know of beekeepers in the Portland area using TBH's that would be willing to mentor?
Thanks wannabee

Hi there, I've built a TBH this year and just installed a package. How can I help?

Ok, I am due to get a package of bees in a week or two. My first question is about feeding....I was going to put a feeder behind the falseback in the rear of the hive (there is room below the falseback for the bees to get under). Is that a good idea or is there a better way? Also, why do folks feed with sugar instead of honey? Is it just because it is cheaper?
Hope your install went well, I would love to see your set up sometime. thanks for your offer of assistance! Wannabee

I've had great success this spring using a chicken feeder with syrup and some pollen patty. I've put them both quite close to the cluster so they don't have far to go. Since it's a top bar hive, it's very easy to maintain without opening everything up. I just remove three bars and replace the syrup quickly every couple days. I'm out in Gresham... here's some photos: keeperofthebees.blogspot.com/2008/04/my-first-bees.html

Fantastic, thanks John. That is extremely helpful, and fun to see the pics too! I was planning to use my chick waterer so that is great to know that it should work. Here's hoping things warm up a little, I should get bees on wednesday! Wahoo!

Just fyi, I installed the bees this morning, they are Amazing. Most are in the hive, I have maybe a couple hundred still clustered outside in the bee box, but otherwise it went great! So far no stings...though I am sure it is only a matter of time. Tomorrow I set the queen up with her marshmallow and then will be able to let them bee for a while. I will try to take a few pics, having a window in the hive is amazing. The bulk of the bees are clustered over the queen cage right now, hopefully getting to know her and keeping her warm.
I have seen the biobees forum, there is a lot of good info there. Maybe I will go lurk there now. Wish me and the ladies luck!

Hey Jeff! Great to know I am not the only one....I am with John and want to know are you new to this too or have you been doing this for a while? I would love to see what you have going and pick your brain some in person. My girls are doing great! I have seen eggs and they are packing in pollen whenever the sun shines, so I think we are queenright.
cheers Laura
