I am a first time bee-keeper and have one hive. I am looking to connect with someone who is able to come to my place in SW Portland and consult with me. I look, but I don't know what is normal. I also can't find the queen, but I think she is there. Send me email if you are willing to spend a short time with me. I live in the Burlingame area of Portland right off Taylors Ferry Road. I can be reached by email at robert.brown@intel.com or phone at 503-244-3304 evenings or weekends.

Bob, if you can, come to the next PDX beekeepers meeting. It's a good place to make contacts and meet people.
2nd thursdays of each month. Time, and place details, are listed on the orsba.org home page.
Good luck...

Bob, I just saw this. If you'd settle for a second-season beekeeper, let me know and I'll see what I can do over the next few days. PM me or shoot me an e-mail at bees@pmfarm.com.

Bob, I hope last night's meeting helped a little. Finding the queen is always difficult, especially if she isn't marked. However, you can be almost sure she is there somewhere if you can find eggs and new larvae. An egg looks like a tiny white dash on the bottom of an open cell. Once you have seen a few, they are much easier to spot (true of the queen, too). Get the sun, or bright light anyway, over your shoulder into the cells, and you will be able to see the eggs. They are only little white dashes for a day or so, then they become little white "C's" coiled at the bottom of cells., and they grow as little "C's" for a few more days before their cells are capped. If you can't see any eggs or larvae, odds are you are queenless. And if there aren't any queen cells either, the hive has a serious problem. Best regards, John Holderness

Hey, Bob--how's it going? I've had to duck out on personal business for a while, but the offer's still good. Being on "vacation" I'm ignoring the phone, so e-mail or PM me.
Since I had laser surgery on my eyes, I'm getting a LOT better at finding those queens and eggs! Um, and those mites.....
