I just populated two new hives a week ago. One hive is very active at the entrance, the other has almost no activity. Would this be normal for new hives?

What did you populate with? If it was a package that could be normal until she has her first round of kinds. Are they bringing in any pollen. They should be bribing in pollen. Were they italian or Carni that makes a difference.

This was packaged bees with Italian queens. I just checked the hive again this morning. The queen and all bees are active in the hive. They're building comb foundation and appear healthy. However, I did notice they are not eating the protein pattie. (the other hive has already eating over half of their pattie. I'm also feeding both hives with sugar water.

If the bees don't take the patty then don't give it to them. There should be plenty of pollen available.
