Here is Nuc # 22 just before it was installed in a hive that the queen had turned drone layer. All of the nucs were loaded with bees, heavy with feed and some brood. This nuc had brood on 2 frames maybe 5" across. As I utilized the nucs I kept thinking maybe they were too heavy with feed. Maybe if they were just a tad lighter they would have more brood. But now after mulling it over, I think it is probably best to error to the heavy side if anything. When these are installed, they are intalled with enough feed to go for a while regardless of the condition of the hive that they are installed in's condition. When installing in a dead-out, I install in the bottom box along with 3 -5 frames of brood and bees from other hives and then checkerboard feed and frames overhead. A pollen patty, fill the feeder with syrup and say your prayers.

Very interesting thread. I did not know that Harry was sharing this ongoing study. I guess you could infer that you want nucs to weight between 40 and 50 pounds going into winter.
I think the wrapping really helps, and agree that erroring on the heavy side won't be detrimental. The pictures I saw looked like strong 5 frame nucs, lots of bees.
My question: when did you start the nucs? End of July? Early August?

Yes, I started this year's nucs in mid to late July. I have recipes for nucs related to the season. Maybe I can share it all at the TVBA later this year. For those that attended WAS it will be a review.
