I teach a class every month called "Bees: The OTHER Way" which is what I wished I could have known before I started keeping bees. It's a class to take before you bring bees home. I cover the culture of bees, what they want and need to stay healthy, how each member of the hive contributes, all about honey/pollen/propolis/wax, the benefits of natural bee activities like swarming, queen succession, ferals and wild native bees, hives from around the world, warre and top bars, and other things organic and biodynamic beekeepers want to know.
2010 dates:
Jan 23, Feb 20, Mar 19-22 (Gunther Hauk)
Apr 3 (swarms), Apr 24, May 1 (seattle),
May 15, May 29 (swarms), Jun 26, Aug 7

Most people who get bees buy a hive body, order some bees and off they go, which leaves a lot of room for errors due to plain old stupidity. I know because I made a lot of these errors myself when I started. I don't consider myself an expert but I have become a pretty good bee teacher and my hives have done better for having a more hands-off approach.
Event March 19-22, 2010, is with Gunther Hauk, the author of "Toward Saving the Honeybee." It's sponsored by the Portland Anthroposophical Society. Includes a new documentary film about bees by Taggart Siegel ("The Real Dirt on Farmer John") called "Queen of the Sun." Gunther and I are both in it.
Monday March 22nd, we're hosting Gunther at our farm to do an all day conversation about organic and biodynamic beekeeping. This is an Advanced Class for people who are already using these methods, a great chance to compare notes and ideas with experienced local folks and a well known bee expert.
I hope it's okay to post this info here. Our website has our class info.
